Samsung will reportedly unveil the Gear S3 smartwatch next month at the IFA 2016. The IFA will be held from 2nd September to 7th September, within which we may get to see the successor of the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch.

The next smartwatch by the company will come with a rotary bezel identical to the present model. This implies that the Gear S3 will also be a round shaped smartwatch. In the IFA, Samsung was known to pull the wraps off a new device in the Galaxy Note line-up. But this year, the company will launch the brand new Galaxy Note 7 on 2nd August. So, the Gear S3 may be Samsung’s prime gadget at the IFA in Berlin.

Samsung Gear S3 vs Samsung Gear S2 Features

Just like the present Gear S2, the upcoming smartwatch is also expected to run on Samsung’s Tizen OS fine-tuned for smartwatches. The former was unveiled previous year in August and was available for purchase a month later.

The Gear S2 is a solidly built smartwatch with stainless steel body. It is also resistant to damages from dust and water. Featuring IP68 certification, the device can be submerged into 1.5 meters deep water for 30 minutes without even a single scratch. The Gear S3 is expected to come with a similar built quality and with better water resistance.

A circular 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display sits on top of the present Samsung smartwatch. The capacitive multi-touch sensitive screen has a resolution of 360 x 360 with a pixel density of 302 pixels per inch. The always on display is shielded by Gorilla Glass 3 and features a rotating bezel. The upcoming smartwatch is speculated to come with a larger 1.5-inch display with upgraded screen resolution. The display will also be made more durable by the latest Gorilla Glass 5.

A 32-bit dual core Exynos 3250 powers the Gear S2. The SoC has two 32-bit Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1 GHz each. A dual core Mali 400 MP2 is the GPU here. The Samsung Gear 2 sports 512 MB of RAM combined with 4 GB of internal memory. The smartwatch runs on Tizen OS, custom OS developed for the wearable platform. The Gear S3 is presumed to rope in an upgraded 64-bit processor.

Just like its predecessor, the forthcoming smartwatch from Samsung will feature a full-scale loudspeaker with a microphone. A vibration motor will also be present. Sensors like barometer, heart-rate monitor, gyroscope, and accelerometer will also be packed in to increase the utility of the device. The present Gear S2 comes with connectivity options like WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth, NFC and even cellular (only in 3G model) is available. The S3 will also additionally bring in 4G LTE support.

Samsung claims a battery life of about 48 hours for the Gear S2, which will increase for the new smartwatch. The Gear S3 will possibly come with support for wireless charging. The Gear S2 is available for around Rs. 23,000 in India. Although there is no information about the pricing of Samsung’s next smartwatch, we expect it to cost around Rs.25000 to Rs.30000 in India.

Apple is also expected to launch the Apple Watch 2 before 2017. The next generation Apple smartwatch is rumored to come with inbuilt cellular connectivity with 4G LTE support. This would be the top competitor of Samsung Gear 3.
