NASA Reveals Plans To Counter Asteroid

NASA has uncovered its new strategy that would eliminate the threats of the potential enormous asteroids that could crash the Earth. The plans will redirect the asteroid known as Didymos. According to the experts, NASA is ready to unleash the new defense mechanism to counteract the massive asteroids. The defense system is called the Double Asteroids Redirection Test (DART).

NASA announced the news on June 30 on how they will redirect the course of action of the said asteroid that is approaching the Earth using the DART system. It’s normal that small asteroids hit the Earth on a daily basis, but the impact is very small that it’s reduced to ashes in the planet’s atmosphere.

The DART project is a joint effort comprising of NASA and John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. The mission is to tackle the asteroids that are too huge to break away and their impact is massive if it gets an opportunity to hit the Earth. The NASA scientists are determined to eradicate the threat of the asteroids that are likely to bring more havoc. The system is set to be tested by 2022.

According to Lindley Johnson from NASA, DART is the first mission for NASA to display the kinetic impactor system that would strike the asteroid to alter its orbit to face the other possible direction away from the Earth. The mission would be a historic test using the non-threatening tiny asteroid. The Didymos asteroid is set to come closer to the Earth by 2022, the same time NASA plans to launch the spacecraft that is a size of a fridge to alter its direction.

DART is an essential step to protect the Earth from any asteroid impact. The news corresponds with the International Asteroid Day when the world celebrates the greatest record on the impact of asteroids in the history of the World. The first asteroid hit Russia in a remote region flattening the forest trees and knocking off the people.

The kinetic impact technique is expected to alter the direction of the asteroid before the predicted object moves closer to the Earth.
