Android Marshmallow running on only 10% Android smartphones, says Google report

According to Google’s latest monthly report on the distribution of Android, its latest Marshmallow platform is running on 10 percent of all smartphones, while Android Lollipop 5.1 in running on around 20 percent of devices.

The Marshmallow is slowing making rapid gains across all the latest devices. In India, we have been witnessing a steady growth of the new platform with Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge kicked off with Marshmallow. We also saw few emerging players like Infocus and NextBit releasing smartphones with Marshmallow.

According to analysts, the rate of growth of Marshmallow has decreased when compared to May. However, with the kind of speed going on between manufacturers to release new smartphones with Android 6 and the continued release of new updates by Google, we can expect a growth of around 15 percent by mid-summer.

As per the data available on the report, IceCream Sandwich still occupies 15 percent of market share, with Jelly Bean 4.3 holding 18 percent share over its previous counterparts like 4.1.x and 4.2.x.

The data reveals the fact that Android KitKat still hasn’t lost ground with over 19% share for its Android 4.4 version. We believe that beginners, senior citizens, and those who are not tech savvy still makes use of smartphones with KitKat. The report also reveals that Lollipop is losing ground over Marshmallow.

If Google and other smartphone manufacturers continue to provide updates, we can expect that Marshmallow will take over Lollipop in the next 2 to 3 months. Moreover, with Android N around the corner, we can expect devices with the upcoming platform as well.

Initially, Android N will have to struggle to retain the market but if Google names it to a famous Indian dessert then we hope it will gather momentum in no time.

In Kerala, Android N is making waves among all sections of people ever since their favorite disk “Neyyappam” was placed on the first spot on the official Google Android name-voting page.
