Android Nougat release date: Final preview hints September launch

Google has officially announced the Android Nougat Developer Preview is being rolled out for beta testers. In addition, the search engine giant has also confirmed that this will be the final preview version of the OS before the expected launch later this year.

Considering the launch pattern of Google, we are expecting Android Nougat to roll out in September this year. Nexus and HTC devices would be the first to receive the update.

Google hasn’t released a complete change log for the final version of the upcoming Android Nougat Developer Preview, so one can’t be sure exactly what will be different. However, Google has listed known issues with the latest update. It certainly gets a number of improvements and bug fixes. Notably, there’s a fix for a bug in the Quick Settings menu, while there’s also an easter egg for beta testers to play around with.

While developers can also continue to update apps as Version 4 of the Android N Developer Preview already included the final API’s.

Below is a quick low down of what’s included in the final preview version of Android N.

  • System images for Nexus and other preview devices
  • An emulator that you can use for doing the final testing of your apps to make sure they’re ready
  • The final N APIs (API level 24) and latest system behaviors and UI
  • The latest bug fixes and optimizations across the system and in pre-installed apps

The company has already confirmed its plans to release the Android N full version in Q3, which means anytime between now and the end of September. Google still has ample time to analyze the final preview and make changes accordingly. As is usually the case, the latest version of Android N will be rolled out to Nexus device owners. Following its release on Nexus devices, it will be rolled out to devices from other manufacturers.
