Google has officially revealed the name of the much-awaited upcoming Android version as Nougat instead of Nutella and Neyyappam, as widely speculated.

In contrast with previous releases, Google opened the name voting page for a specific period of time, during which people widely rumored about all possible names. The recently revealed Android Nougat is a popular hard, chewy white dessert based in Europe.

According to the Cambridge Dictionaries Online, Nougat is “a hard, chewy white or pink sweet food, usually containing nuts.” In addition to the popular Snickers bar, 3 Musketeers, and Baby Ruth are also considered as famous Nougat-based dessert. However, there is a wide range of nougat-based items which are usually displayed in various sweet shop and bakeries.

Originated from the word Occitan pan nogat, Nougat was a medium-strength contender during the whole name voting phase.

The official Android Nougat logo unwrapping video reveals all possible names which surfaced during the voting phase. The video also displays people from around the world specifying the possible names for the Android N. Finally, the less than 50 seconds video showcases the big logo with employees of Google happily watching the unwrapping event with few people tasting the Nougat cake.

Initially showcased in March via a developer preview, Android N provides support for multiple apps on the same window though split screen functionality. It will automatically modify the display of various app with the ability to create custom dimensions. The “Quick Settings” feature enables you to toggle up to nine apps in a single screen with the capability to access additional apps by swiping to the right.

With Android 7 Nougat, Doze that was previously introduced in Android Marshmallow will work even if your device is turned off. This feature will improve the battery life to a great extent. Moreover, it is also possible to block phone numbers at the system level directly from Dialler, Hangouts or Messenger.
