OnePlus X finally gets the first build of Oxygen OS based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Though unlike the usual over-the-air update, this is just the community preview of Oxygen OS 3.1.0 based on Google’s Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Implying it’s not the final version and is likely to come with stability and performance issues. That said, it finally brings the handset one step closer to get the Android Marshmallow upgrade after being stuck on Lollipop for almost a year.
Besides announcing the OxygenOS 3.1.0 community preview, the company also announced some of the changes the smartphone will receive the update. Along with the usual visual improvements to the launcher which include new icon packs, Google search bar UI customization, and new wallpaper picker, OnePlus has also added some UX upgrades. For instance, long press on boards will allow users to remove or reorganize.
In addition, the Settings menu gets new app permissions along with additional Alert Slider settings to allow more customization options. The update will also bring two new applications which include OnePlus Music Player and OnePlus Gallery. Finally, the latest Oxygen OS 3.0.1 update also brings new security patches for Android.
Being a community build, there are still some issues that need to be fixed. For instance, there are issues with mobile network stability in some regions. Moreover, users may experience some compatibility issues with a few third-party applications. While language localization also needs a few improvements.
According to the company, users interested in getting the new OxygenOS 3.1.0 update on their OnePlus X will need to perform a factory reset. Users can find the download link at the company’s official downloads page. OnePlus has asked users who install the update to help the community by providing feedback. It’s also worth pointing out that this release is limited, and the company says it might disable the download link at some point in the future if as soon as enough feedback is provided.
To recall, OnePlus initially announced that its flagship OnePlus One, OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X would be updated with Android 6.0 Marshmallow OxygenOS over the air starting from January 2016 last year in December, though did not mention an exact timeline for these updates.
In other related news, OnePlus also released new B2X On-Guard and B2X On-Guard Plus service plans for the OnePlus X. The B2X On-Guard service package offers protection from all damages for a period of one year from the date of purchase. While the B2X On-Guard Plus gets you free additional one year warranty along with the original one-year protection that you get after purchase.
