Moto 360 (1st gen) and LG G Watch will not receive Android Wear 2.0 update

Motorola confirmed through Android Police on June 13th that their Moto360 first-gen smartwatch will not receive the Android Wear 2.0 update. This comes after Motorola employed the use of their official Twitter account to tweet about the same news recently.

When launched almost two years ago, the Moto 360 Gen. 1 received a lot of laud for its new rounded dial as well as its neatly defined bezel and keys.

Google has repeatedly implied in the past that Android Wear devices will not age like smartphones do, on account of support being cut-off like with old gen smartphones that stop receiving the newest OS updates.

Google announced the Android Wear 2.0 during its I/O event earlier this year and said that the new smartwatch platform would be made available later this fall. The company, however, did not make any announcement on the compatibility of the new platform.

Android Wear 2.0 was set to bring a host of improvements and features to existing devices, including a keyboard and handwriting capabilities, customizations for the watch face, better options to reply with as well as a renewed interface altogether.

The Moto360 Gen. 1 is a watch after all and one would expect it to last you more than two years, especially when a smartwatch costs you over $300. The LG G Watch will suffer the same fate as the Moto360 Gen. 1 has. A post on LG USA’s Twitter account suggests that the support for their G Watch W100 has been discontinued and that it won’t be receiving the Android Wear 2.0 update either.

While the Moto360 Gen. 1 will not receive any more major updates to its Android Wear 1.x version platform, it will continue to receive the mandatory security updates like it currently does.

So if you’re looking to upgrade to a new smartwatch, now is probably the best time so you can experience Android Wear 2.0 on an upgraded device.
