Gionee M7 Power Review – The phone that’s got all right for the offline market

Gionee M7 Power

Gionee is a bit late to the party of the latest smartphone trend, the 18:9 display with minimal bezels, but as we say, “better late than never.” Keeping that in mind, Gionee released a new smartphone, Gionee M7 Power with a bunch of amazing features. The phone comes with minimal bezels design and a large battery. Other specifications about the Gionee M7 Power are great too, and here we are testing out all the features. Gionee M7 Power comes with a price tag of Rs. 16,999 and available to buy from Amazon and mostly in all the offline retail store across the country.

Design

Gionee M7 Power looks like a concept smartphone come to life; a blocky design, minimal bezels either side of the display and Gionee branding at the chin. The smartphone really packs some great looks in it, overall the smartphone is built of plastic and glass, but the sturdy-ness of the phone felt at the first hold of it.

The front panel of the smartphone is all display with minimal bezels at the top and bottom of the screen. No navigation buttons outside, the chin is all about banding and even that is under the glass which is also protecting the display. The upper lip of the front panel holds the same components as a regular smartphone do; a camera, earpiece and light sensor.

The right side of the phone has a power button, and volume rocker, left side has SIM card tray slot, top side has an IR blaster, and bottom edge has a microUSB port, 3.5 mm audio port and speaker grill. The back of the phone has a fascinating groovy pattern with a little twist of glass. There is a small bar at the top part of the back panel which holds the camera and looks great too. Except these, the back has the Gionee branding and circular fingerprint sensor for unlocking the phone.

Display

The 6-inch HD+ IPS panel looks super cool on the smartphone with minimal bezels either side of it, and it performs well too. The screen doesn’t have a super bright panel, but it gets the job done when using it outside in the sun. The viewing angles are perfect to some extent, and the contrast is also excellent.

Because the display is big and comes with fewer distractions (bezels), we expected a higher resolution on it. Gionee M7 Power comes with an HD+ (1440 X 720) display and 268 ppi pixel density but what matters more is that it is an 18:9 aspect ratio display and videos are going to look amazing on it.

Camera

Gionee is still not in the dual camera game, Gionee M7 Power comes with a 13MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture and LED flash. The front-facing camera is an 8MP shooter with f/2.2 aperture. The primary camera is capable of capturing 1080p videos at 30 frames per second. It comes with features like the beauty effect and 3D pictures which creates a 3D image using the same camera.

The pictures captured with Gionee M7 Power are quite significant according to the sharpness and clarity of the image. The color reproduction is not very good; bokeh effect didn’t impress us either. 3D pictures are good, but technically it is no use and has an arduous procedure to capture a perfect 3D image for yourself.

The camera also suffers in artificial or low light conditions and the pictures starts to lack details too in low light conditions. The selfie camera is an 8MP shooter with Beauty mode, and it captures good selfies also. Overall the camera defines the price of the full smartphone.

Performance

The Gionee M7 Power comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 Octa-core 1.4 GHz processor which is a low mid ranged processor, but because it is the latest release, it performs really well under most of the conditions. The Adreno 505 GPU and the 4GB RAM makes everything smooth and fast, capable of playing any game built buy now for smartphones except for high end online multiplayer FPS games.

The smartphone comes running the latest Android 7.0 Nougat operating system with Amigo OS 5.0 layered on top. The user interface is a lot different from a stock Android interface which is not a very good idea because custom user interfaces sometimes degrade the performance a bit and it sometimes happens in Gionee M7 Power too.

The battery in this beast is 5000 mAh rated which is a most significant battery on a smartphone right now. And the battery does its job perfectly by providing the full two days of usage with intense usage. A typical usage can make the battery last for more than three days. There is no fast charging feature which is a negative because it takes a long time to charge this battery to 100 percent.

Pros

  • Great design and build quality
  • Good display
  • Bigger battery

Cons

  • Camera needs improvement
  • Software could be a bit better

Verdict

The Gionee M7 Power is a one of a kind smartphone because not any smartphone is available in the market which comes with a large battery and an 18:9 aspect ratio display. Overall the smartphone defines every penny you will spend on this smartphone. There is also a typical version of this smartphone available to buy with a smaller battery and similar display.
