Apple iPad 2018 to have Face ID, bezel-less display, and no 3.5 mm jack

Apple iPad

It isn’t just the three iPhones that Apple has in line for a launch this year but new iPad devices as well. And there already is some information about the brand new iPad devices that has surfaced online, providing us with a sneak peek of what to expect with the new gen Apple tablet.

The revelation isn’t entirely unexpected though given that those again happen to be in line with the usual evolutionary path Apple has been following with its mobile devices off late. That includes a bezel-less display and incorporation of Face ID tech while the 3.5mm headphone jack seems to be on the way out for the future iPad tablets. The report courtesy of Japanese site Macotakara would also like us to believe Apple is prepping two iPad devices for launch this year bearing dimensions of 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch.

That the upcoming new iPads would have a negligible bezel is evident from the dimension that the tablet is believed to come with, that being 247.5 x 178.7 x 6mm for the 10.5-inch iPad. Compare that with dimensions of 250.6 x 174.1 x 6.1mm for the current version of 10.5-inch iPad. Similarly, the 12.9-inch iPad too will have its overall footprint reduced to just 280 x 215 x 6.4mm from the 305.7 x 220.6 x 6.9mm for the current iPad Pro device. That makes it evident the reduction in bezel depth is going to be more pronounced with the 12.9-inch version than its smaller sibling.

The inclusion of Face ID tech too has been rumoured for sometime now and it seems the upcoming batch of iPad devices is going to be the first to benefit from the facial recognition technology. This again goes well with rumors of bezels getting reduced to just the bare minimum with there being no space for the placement of the home button and hence the integrated fingerprint sensor as well.

Coming to the 3.5mm headphone jack, Apple’s apathy for the same is well known. That makes it quite natural for the company ditching the same for the new iPad devices. Then again, there is some ambiguity in this considering that some opine that the upcoming iPhone devices are expected to have the 3.5mm headphone slots.

The rest of the story is missing, which includes the other likely specifications along with the expected launch schedule and such. No doubt we will more of those in the coming months. So keep watching.
