Huawei P9 First Impressions: Leica dual 12MP camera is impressive

Huawei has launched the much-awaited Huawei P9 with 3GB RAM and 3000mAh battery in Prestige Gold color variant at Rs. 39,999. The main attraction of Huawei P9 is the integration of 12MP dual-camera setup with Leica SUMMARIT lenses, dual-tone LED flash, and 1.25-micron pixels. According to company sources, the camera included with the smartphone has an ability to deliver exceptional image quality in low-light conditions. Moreover, the Huawei P9 included an advanced 3D fingerprint scanner, triple antenna, smart Wi-Fi ranking, enhanced file system module and much more. Launched in China in April 2016, the Huawei P9 will be available exclusively on Flipkart starting August 17 with special offers.

Beauty of Leica camera in Huawei P9

The Huawei P9 ships with a two 12MP sensor designed and developed by Leica optics with f/2.2 aperture, phase detection autofocus, and dual-LED flash. The handset enables you to capture stunning Monochrome shots and also comes with features such as beauty, HRD, beauty video, Timelapse, Night Shot, Light painting, Slo-motion and watermark mode. You will also find pre-defined filters like Sentimental, Impact, ND, Valencia, Blue, Halo, Nostalgia and Dawn. However, the P9 smartphone will not provide support for shooting 4K videos.

Even though you will find plenty of new smartphones with same specifications, it’s the camera part, which sets apart from its competitors. Since the current generation of tech enthusiasts making extensive use of smartphones to capture real-life images, the importance of a device with premium quality camera assumes great importance.

Huawei P9 Display

Huawei P9 features a 5.2-inch FHD IPS-NEO display with a pixel density of 423PPI. The display also offers 96 percent color saturation and high contrast. Based on the pricing, you will get plenty of budget smartphones with a 5.5-inch FHD display. But you have to compromise on the camera segment. The main beauty of P9 is the dual-camera with which you can capture virtually stunning images.

Performance

The newly launched Huawei P9 packs a HiSilicon Kirin 955 processor and Mali-T880 MP4 graphics. When other handsets are shipping with Snapdragon and Helios, Huawei has introduced Kirin processor. The octa-core processor enables you to work with the device without any major lags.

Huawei P9 OS and RAM

The smartphone also offers a 3GB RAM paired with a 32GB internal storage, which can be expandable up to 256GB. However, the company only launched 3GB model in India.

The Huawei P9 is loaded with Android 6.0 Marshmallow on top of Huawei EMUI 4.1.

Huawei P9 Battery and Connectivity

Huawei P9 is powered by a 3000mAh battery with fast charging support via USB Type-C port. You will be able to charge the device up to 44 percent in 30 minutes. The handset offers an ability to deliver a talk time of 18 hours on a 3G network.

In addition to the fingerprint sensor on the rear side, the new handset also provides support for connectivity features such as 4G, LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC.

A big drawback of the Huawei P9 smartphone is the integration of a nano-SIM card slot. Hence, you will not be able to use the phone if you have micro SIM.

Huawei P9 Camera

As mentioned in the beginning, the rear camera offers a 12MP dual-camera system with sensor manufactured by Leica. This means you will be able to view two 12MP camera sensors on the rear side. The dual-tone LED flash helps you to capture stunning images even in low-light conditions. The handset also includes an 8MP front-facing snapper with a f/2.4 aperture, in addition, to FHD video recording.

Free display and device replacements for Huawei P9

Huawei P9 comes with 2 years of warranty with pick & drop service across India. Moreover, the company is offering one free display replacement for any accidental damage to the display of the device within first three months of the purchase. Moreover, you will be eligible for one free device replacement instead of repair provided if the unit fails during the first three months of the purchase.

During the launch event, Huawei revealed that the company is working on to establish over 100 service centers. The company will also establish partnerships with 50000+ offline retail stores across India.

Huawei P9 Availability

Huawei P9 is available for Rs. 39,999 from Flipkart. As part of the launch offer, Flipkart is offering a discount of up to Rs. 15000 on the exchange of an old working smartphone. You can also avail no cost EMI from Rs. 3334 per month from various banks.

Verdict

Huawei P9 will be suitable if you would like to capture plenty of images. The smartphone is mainly built for photographic enthusiasts. If you compare the specifications other than the camera, you will find plenty of similar devices on the market. The addition of 12MP dual-camera with Leica sensor packs a punch with several features and filters. We can only tell if the phone is worth buying, only after our full review.
