As Sony’s annual Days of Play promotion came to a close, PlayStation users found themselves with a surprise gift – four free Astro Bot avatars. This gesture of goodwill comes as the PlayStation Stars loyalty program remains offline, leaving many players unable to access or redeem their points.
The PlayStation Stars program, which launched in 2022, allows players to earn points for completing various activities such as playing games, earning trophies, and purchasing items from the PlayStation Store. These points can then be redeemed for rewards, including digital collectibles, games, and even PlayStation hardware.
However, the program has been plagued by technical issues since its launch, with users reporting problems accessing their accounts, redeeming rewards, and even earning points. The latest outage, which began on June 12th, has left many players frustrated and disappointed, especially with the Days of Play promotion offering bonus points for certain activities.
In an attempt to appease disgruntled players, Sony announced the free Astro Bot avatars as a “thank you” for participating in the Days of Play Community Challenge. The avatars, which feature the lovable Astro Bot character from the popular Astro Bot Rescue Mission game, can be redeemed through the PlayStation Store until July 11th.
While the free avatars may not fully compensate for the ongoing PlayStation Stars issues, they serve as a reminder that Sony is aware of the problem and is working to resolve it. The company has stated that it is “actively working on a solution” and will share more information on redeeming the Days of Play Community Celebration Digital Collectible as soon as possible.
In the meantime, PlayStation users can enjoy their new Astro Bot avatars and look forward to the eventual return of the PlayStation Stars program. Whether this gesture will be enough to quell the frustration of loyal players remains to be seen, but it is a step in the right direction as Sony seeks to restore faith in its rewards program.
