Samsung Electronics has given out solid hints that the future flagships from the company will get rid of the flat screen displays. Instead from now on, all S-series smartphones are expected to come with curved displays.
Last week, at a press conference in New York, Samsung Mobile division’s head, Koh Dong Jin said –
Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone line-up if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen).
We have seen that the Galaxy Note 7 in spite of sporting a curved display does not come with an “Edge” tag added to its name. This may be the beginning of Samsung’s brand new trend of equipping its flagships with curved screens. The Note 7 may, in fact, serve as the litmus test of the company to move on with its plan.
The first smartphone launched by the company with a curved display is the Galaxy Note Edge. Launched back in September 2014, the handset came with a display which was curved on one side. The handset achieved respectable sales figure. After that, in the month of April in 2015, the company brought its first dual curved smartphone, the Galaxy S6 Edge. The phone was pretty well received and liked by many due to its stunning appeal.
Then Samsung brought the Galaxy S7 Edge in March this year. The phone was an instant hit but failed to achieve the expected sales figure due to supply constraints. Samsung faced some glitches in manufacturing the dual curved display in large scales. But, now, the company has managed to overcome the issues and has attained a decent production level for the dual curved screens. This has given the company enough courage to launch the Galaxy Note 7 with solely a curved screen variant.
Recently, Samsung has announced that it has sold more units of the Galaxy S7 Edge than the convention S7 with a flat screen display. Market analysts although refuse to accept that the Korean giant will shred the flat screen variant off its S-series flagship line-up this soon.
They tend to suggest that the company will give more emphasis to the Edge screen variant but will keep the flat screen variants at the side too. They also mentioned that the market performance of the Note 7 would serve as the major deciding factor for Samsung’s future plans.
