Apple with the launch of the AirPods has fueled a new category of product that has been getting quite an attention from buyers. Not everyone can afford a pair of AirPods, and this is where brands like Meizu come in. The Meizu POP is company’s first attempt towards the True Wireless Earphone (TWS) market, and they come at a very competitive price. Design
Just like other truly wireless earbuds, the Meizu POP comes with a charging case with a magnetic lid. There is Meizu branding on the front with the battery level LED. On the back, you get a button, which lights up the LED’s on the front to the charging case battery case. Going towards the bottom of the case, you will find the Type-C port to charge the case along with the regulatory logos.
The earphones itself are just a little over the size of a regular earphone. They have a LED ring around the outer casing with the Meizu logo in the centre. The plate with logo is touch sensitive, and there are a bunch of controls that can be performed using taps. The earbuds have an angled tip and sit snug inside the ears. On the inner side are the golden contact pads which are used to charge the inbuilt battery. There are built-in microphones on both the units and they weight a mere 5.8 gms each.
Performance
Connectivity wise the Meizu POP is straightforward to pair. As soon as you open the case, the earbuds are active, and upon pulling them out of the case, they are already in pairing mode if aren’t paired with any device in the past. The earbuds are loud and have a wider soundstage. The vocals are clear with the mids are a little held down in our opinion. The buds aren’t tuned for bass so people wanting that should look elsewhere.
The earbuds come with a graphene diaphragm which provides longevity and less distortion. The inbuilt mics are omnidirectional and provide crystal clear calls. Talking about the controls, upon tapping the left or right earbud once pauses the tracks, double tapping skips the tracks while triple taps are programmed to launch the virtual assistants.
Meizu has thrown in the silicone cover with wings in the package itself which provide extra security and are useful when doing intense activities. The buds are IPX5 certified meaning they can withstand light splashes and sweat.
Talking about the battery, the earbuds come with 85mAh battery each side which gives about 3 hours of backup and there is an additional 700 mAh battery in the case which is sufficient to charge the earbuds four times.
