Samsung Galaxy S8 release date hints Edge-only variant

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy flagships might not feature a flat screen at all. According to a new report from Korea Herald, both of the company’s forthcoming Galaxy S8 models will come equipped with curved screens. Though will retain the same 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes as the current Galaxy S7.

The report further adds that improved yield rates will play a pivotal role. As back in 2015, when the company launched its first curved screen smartphone with the Galaxy S6 Edge, it failed to capitalize on sales momentum as it didn’t have enough supply of curved displays.

Sources also suggest that Samsung has already started procuring display panels in 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes, through its own display making unit called Samsung Display – the world’s only maker of double edged screens. If this turns out to be true, Samsung might completely do away with the Edge ‘monicker’. And perhaps Samsung’s next flagships will just be called the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus.

It’ll be interesting to see what changes the company has in store with the upcoming Galaxy S8’s design. The company has been redesigning its flagship smartphones starting with the Galaxy S6, with every successor of the flagship handset getting slight overhauls of the same design. We can’t wait to find out the Samsung’s take on ergonomics and design elements with the next Galaxy S8.

Besides, it has also been rumored that the Galaxy S8 might feature a 4K display, which would be the first for any Samsung phone as the company has big plans to cash in on the future of VR. In addition, next year’s Galaxy flagship is expected to feature a new dual-lens camera setup – one featuring a 12MP lens, while the other will be at 13MP. Samsung’s own camera division is expected to source these cameras, along with technical collaboration from Sony. On the front, the Galaxy S8 is expected to get an 8MP selfie shooter.

Furthermore, reports also suggest the Galaxy S8 to get another camera housed above the display, possible because the device might feature the Iris scanning functionality, similar to the one found on the Galaxy Note 7.
