Huawei unveils end-to-end NB-IoT solution at MWC 2016

Huawei has launched an end-to-end Narrow-band IoT (NB-IoT) solution at the ongoing Internet of Things (IoT) Summit during Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2016. Expected to be available in September 2016, Huawei is planning to conduct a large commercial trial during Q4 2016 and subsequent release for commercial use towards the end of 2016.

Commenting on the development, Jiang Wangcheng, Vice President, Marketing & Solutions Department revealed that the total number of mobile IoT connectivity around the world is expected to grow seven-fold over the next three to four years and NB-IoT will play a key role towards the ultimate goal of reaching this estimate. Moreover, the new technology will play a pivotal role in the evolving core IoT strategy and help in the growth of IoT applications.

Huawei is also actively developing a robust ecosystem to explore new business areas in partnership with carriers and partners, adds Wangcheng.

The end-to-end NB-IoT Solution consists of Smart Device Solution enabled by Huawei LiteOS and NB-IoT Chipset, eNodeB base stations, IoT Packet Core, network functions virtualization (NFV) including a cloud-based IoT Connection Management Platform with big data capabilities.

Developed to meet the growing operator’s requirements for IoT services with low-power and wide-area (LPWA) coverage, the new NB-IoT solution is based on 3GPP standards to provide a flexible environment for various industries and use scenarios.

The newly-released end-to-end NB-IoT Solution is designed to provide rapid full network coverage via its SingleRAN architecture. This will enable operators to grow their networks, reduce network costs, and extend NB-IoT connections worldwide in addition to an increase in market share.

In conjunction with Huawei LiteOS, the NB-IoT chips are capable of shortening the time-to-market of smart NB-IoT devices. Moreover, with IoT agent, the cloud-based IoT Connection Management Platform automatically activates open connection management, big data capabilities, and innovative industry-specific applications.

Earlier, Huawei has provided assistance to operators to build NB-IoT open labs to accelerate the development of smart NB-IoT devices and applications.

In Q3 2016, Huawei will launch SoftRadio, which allows developers to access NB-IoT labs via the Internet for remote innovation and commissioning. The company is also expected to release an IoT open lab whitepaper to provide technical guidance and support for developers to access and use the open labs.
