Piaggio Aprilia SR 150 India launch in August, Price revealed

Piaggio is planning to launch its maiden scooter in India, the Aprilia SR 150, in August 2016. Designed and engineered in Italy, the company’s second scooter in India will be manufactured in their plant in Baramati, Maharashtra. The vehicle is pegged at a price of Rs. 65,000.

Piaggio already sells the Vespa brand of scooters without gears. In the second quarter of 2016, according to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), Piaggio sold 7,107 units of the Vespa as opposed to 6,791 units a year ago.

India being one of the largest markets of scooter in the world saw the sale of around five million units in the year 2015. The country saw 20% growth in the first half of 2016 compared to last year. According to Siam, quarterly sales in India rose to 13,72,337 units in the quarter that ended in June as compared to 10,79,535 units a year ago.

The Aprilia SR 150 will have five-spoke, 14-inch wheels—similar to their racing bikes. It will have a four-stroke, a single-cylinder 150cc engine.

With the Aprilia SR 150 design and engine, Piaggio hopes to reach out to the urban youth. Keeping in mind the heritage of Aprilia, the SR 150 conjures the feel of a sports bike with the ease of a scooter, the company said.

The response to Piaggio bikes has received a favourable response in the country. With the Aprilia SR 150, it aims to increase its reach across the country, said the managing director and chief executive of Piaggio Vehicles, Stefano Pelle. The design of the SR 150 reflects a sporty character of the Aprilia brand.

Other brands like Activa and Bajaj have already got a strong foothold in the country. However, the classic design approach of Piaggio is almost unparalleled in the country.
