OnePlus, the no.2 premium smartphone brand in India, is venturing into the television market by launching a smartTV internally called the OnePlus TV. The company’s founder and CEO Pete Lau confirmed the news adding that he’ll be heading the new TV division along with the current smartphone division.
That said, the company did not reveal any details about the upcoming smartTV. However, they did mention it will be a premium, high-end smartTV equipped with new technologies such AI.
“As other consumer electronics have evolved and improved our lives, televisions have remained conventional and cumbersome,” said Lau, in a press statement while announcing the new division. “We bring inherent advantages to the industry, and with this new division, we’re excited to explore the total connected user experience that can enhance everyday life.”
OnePlus has asked its ever growing community of nearly five million members across the world to help give the name of the company’s first television. The company plans to release its first smartTV sometime next year.
It’s worth noting that the announcement comes shortly after OnePlus announced its first USB Type-C headphones that will release alongside its next flagship smartphone allegedly called the OnePlus 6T. The upcoming handset will be the successor to the OnePlus 6 that was released earlier this year.
OnePlus claims its Type C bullets deliver ‘ minimal loss of quality for superior audio outcome. With these new Type C headphones to release alongside the company’s next flagship, it appears the company will likely ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack from the OnePlus 6T. Besides, the company has officially confirmed that its next flagship will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor.
