Canon Pixma G3010 Review

Build Quality and Design

The Canon Pixma G3010 comes in a classy looking black colour with a subtle matte finish on the top. The body gives a solid and premium feel but the catches tiny smudges over time. While the printer isn’t small by any means, it still is light enough to be carried anywhere around without any trouble.

All the control buttons, including a 1.2-inch LCD display, are placed to the right corner, offering the ease to operate while sitting on the other side. The buttons are well-built and provide good tactile feedback. Moving further, there’s a USB port on the left side for wired connection, accompanied by the power inlet socket given to the right.

Now there’s not much to talk about the design as it has everything a typical printer comes with, including an extendable paper input and output trays. Interestingly, the paper input tray can be folded back on top of the printer itself, making it even easier to store when not in use.

Note that Canon has placed the ink tanks right at the front which helps you monitor the ink-levels conveniently. Also, the ink bottles have spill-resistant tops, aiding for a seamless and clean experience at home as well as offices.

Setup

Setting up the Canon Pixma G3010 is quite easy. Once you go through the user manual, you can install it manually within a few minutes- obviously, it’s not rocket science. Anyways, the company does offer free installation and support, which can be availed by contacting customer care.

If in case you decide to do it on yourself as we did, start with the removal of orange-coloured tape from sides and the edges. After that, open the printer’s lid and again remove the orange-coloured protective covering from the cartridge area. Next, you need to open the seal and install the cartridges in the print head as per the user manual.

After following the installation instructions carefully, connect it and turn it on for some time. Now, turn it off back, open the hood and fill in the ink tanks one by one with the given black and CMK ink bottles. Now, switch it on again, and it’ll take about 5-10 minutes to fill up the cartridges with colours. Once done, you can put the papers in, and it’s ready to start printing.

Connectivity

You can take prints by connecting the printer either to your PC or to your smartphone. To attach the printer to your computer, you can use the given USB port and cable after installing the drivers from the included CD.

For wireless connection through smartphones, you need to download the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY (available on both Android & iOS). After that, you can directly print photos, documents, or scan items right from your phone by either using NFC or connecting it through a WiFi network.

You can also connect the printer to your WiFi LAN so that all your local devices, including phones and computers, can access it wirelessly and print without the need of switching cables or creating a wired network. So if you own an office with multiple devices, it’s quite easy to connect them wirelessly through your WiFi router.

Performance

In our review period, we used the Pixma G3010 to print out copies of black and white documents, coloured documents, images and even some cool motivation posters on regular as well as glossy papers.

Notably, the quality of photos printed through the phone partially depends on what settings you opt for while giving the print job. Setting the paper quality to “high-resolution paper” usually yielded the best results for us compared to the default option.

Overall, the output quality was excellent, especially on glossy print sheets. Even the printing speeds were quite good, and we easily managed to take around 4-5 colour prints in a minute. While many other printers tend to give wet results, there’s no such issue with the G3010. There’s no colour bleeding, colours don’t fade, and the ink doesn’t smudge even after accidental rubs.

The scanner, on the other hand, offers average quality on default settings. It was only after setting the scan dpi settings to 600dpi that we started getting decent results. Interestingly, you can also save the scanned copy to your phone directly while initiating a scan through the Canon Print app.

Cost-Effectiveness

The Canon Pixma G3010 can deliver up to 7,000 black and white document pages and 6,000 colour document pages with the bundled set of four ink bottles. While we are yet to pass that limit, it is indeed quite amazing for a printer priced well under Rs. 13,000.

Notably, one colour print costs around 0.21 paise while printing a black and white page costs about 0.8 paise. Each ink bottle can be purchased for a little over INR 500, making it an affordable solution for businesses with high print volume demands.

Pros:

  • Lightweight, Well-built
  • Easy to operate
  • Excellent Print Quality
  • Affordable
  • Can print wirelessly through phone/ WiFi LAN

Cons:

  • Not officially compatible with Mac
  • Scan quality could’ve been better

Canon Pixma G3010 Review Verdict- Is it worth?

The Canon Pixma G3010 is indeed a versatile printer, delivering the best of both the worlds. It offers almost all the features you’ll demand in a printer, right from NFC to WiFi for wireless prints, ability to take print jobs via phone, affordable print cost and lightweight form factor.

Above all, it’s easy to operate and accouches good picture quality. So if you’re someone looking for a printer under Rs. 15,000 for home and or office purposes, the Canon Pixma G3010 is an ideal option to be considered amongst the likes of HP, Epson and Samsung.
