Airtel 4G services have been launched in Bengaluru, based on FD-LTE technology in the 1800 MHz spectrum band.
This would be on top of the 4G services that the carrier had introduced in Bengaluru back in February 2012 based on TD-LTE tech using the 2300 MHz spectrum band. With this, Bengaluru has joined the select group of cities in the country boasting 4G cellular connectivity using both TD and FD standards.
From the end user point of view, 4G services in both the 2300 MHz and 1800 MHz spectrum range will allow for seamless connectivity and better experience.

“Today’s launch is a major milestone for Airtel in Bengaluru. We gave the city its first 4G network and have received very good response from customers. Given the explosive growth of mobile data services and content consumed on mobiles, the addition of a second 4G carrier will surely add to the experience of the customers on our network,” C Surendran, chief executive officer – Karnataka, Bharti Airtel Limited said while speaking on the launch. “Airtel has also rolled out the widest 4G network in Karnataka with services now available in 130 towns. We remain committed to the digital vision of the state.”
The above development forms part of Airtel’s Project Leap initiative which the company described as its network transformation program. It also calls for a nationwide investment of a massive Rs. 60,000 crore towards revamping its network infrastructure.

Airtel is already offering 4G SIM free of cost to anyone opting to avail of its services while keeping their existing mobile numbers unchanged. Those eager can also opt to have the 4G SIMs delivered right to their home completely free.
Airtel also stated they have made their 4G tariff charges extremely competitive vis-a-vis its 3G services. Obviously, the game plan here is to tap into its existing 3G customer base while also luring in fresh clients. The recent influx of affordable 4G smartphones in the market is also leading to increased demand for 4G services which Airtel is all too happy to cash in on.
