Tesla Inc., the American automaker is working on a backup plan if its long-standing promise to bring “Full Self-Driving Capability” onto roads falls short to meet the market demands, claimed the latest report, and published by Electrek. As the report highlights, Tesla has been working on the development of a new supercomputing hardware suite which will help Tesla achieving its goal of introducing full automation to the automobile seat.
But note that, the updated onboard supercomputer hardware, named as “HW 2.5,” is contradicting the previous promise, made by the Billionaire CEO of Tesla Inc., Elon Musk. Last year, Elon Musk, in an event, vowed that once the Autopilot system of Tesla completed the accumulation of sufficient real-world telemetry and data, the automaker brand will launch an over-the-air software update to all Tesla models, released after October 2016 for enabling full automation to the vehicles.
But now it seems that Tesla is stepping its steps back from its promise, by developing this new hardware suite and as reported by Electrek if its current Full Self-Driving Capability system falls short, the new device, dubbed ‘HW 2.5’ will be pushed out to the market. Hinting to its back up plan, Tesla, on its website has mentioned the availability of the option for “full self-driving capability” for $48 per month or $4,000 post delivery of the Model S. Alongside this, the American automobile brand also highlights that –
“Please note that Self-driving functionality is dependent on extensive software validation and regulatory approval, which may vary widely by jurisdiction.”
In a statement to Electrek, a spokesperson of Tesla has confirmed that “The presence of HW 2.5 will play down the significance of the Full Self-Driving Capability system. HW 2.5 is integrated with some powerful computing and wiring severance, which slightly perks up the reliability, but it lacks the additional option of Pascal GPU.”
As added by the spokesperson of Tesla, all new models of the Tesla Model S, X, and 3, ordered today will be shipped with the new supercomputing hardware suite, and are completely promised to update any latest HW 2.0-equipped Tesla vehicles, running on the road today with HW 2.5 in case, the service of full autonomy is unattainable.
