Elephone P9000 Review: A flagship at budget price!

Elephone is a Chinese brand is making good smartphones at such a reasonable price that anyone can afford. One of those smartphones is Elephone P9000; this phone comes with such and amazing hardware at a price tag of Rs. 11,999. Elephone P9000’s specs include 5.5 inches full HD display, 13 MP camera and USB Type-C port. Yes! Elephone P9000 is the only budget smartphone which comes with a USB Type-C port. Let’s dig out more of this smartphone in a broad review and see what else Elephone P9000 is going to offer.

Unboxing and Design

Unboxing the Elephone P9000 is as straightforward as the smartphones are, the box is all white, and some information is printed at the back of the box. The first thing we got inside the box is, of course, the Elephone P9000 and below it is a compartment filled with the documents, SIM tray ejection tool and a clear case for the smartphone. Under that compartment, there is enough space for two more boxes with charging brick and USB cable (Type A to Type C).

Elephone P9000 1

Elephone has worked on the design and to be honest, P9000 is the best-looking smartphone I have seen on Chinese smartphone market. Well, not totally because the design looks much similar to OnePlus 2, but I had to say that Elephone P9000 is better-looking smartphone than OnePlus 2. Why? Bezels! Elephone squeezed the bezels around the screen in Elephone P9000 and made it looks kind of cool and different from what most of the Chinese brands doing with their smartphones.

The Display is bordered with a very thin bezel, the side bezels are 1.6mm thick, and the top and bottom bezels are also much smaller. There is only one touch capacitive key below the display (with no backlight) which does a work of three navigation buttons; single tap for the back, double-tap for home and tap and hold for recent apps screen. If it feels awkward to you to use that button for navigation, then the software navigation bar can be enabled from the settings.

The sides of the smartphone are flat, and there is a polished chamfer around the edges of the screen of the phone. The top edge has a 3.5 mm jack and bottom edge has the USB Type-C port, loudspeaker, and the microphone. The power button and the volume rocker is on the right side, and left side got the SIM card tray slot and the mute button. Elephone succeeded in making a smartphone without copy pasting other flagship’s design.

Specifications and Software

Elephone P9000 is a budget smartphone, but the hardware is a mid ranged smartphone including a USB Type C like in flagship smartphones. The display is 5.5 inches with 1080 X 1920 resolution and 401 PPI pixel density which is amazing. It runs on a MediaTek MT6755 SoC which is an octa-core processor with Mali-T860 GPU and 4GB RAM.

The rear camera is 13MP with f/2.0 aperture, and secondary camera is 8MP for selfies, both the cameras can shoot Full H videos at 30 frames per second. The rear camera is equipped with dual LED dual tone flash and laser autofocus focus for super fast focus. The fingerprint sensor is back mounted with a black matte finish which blends in perfectly in the black back panel with the sandstone finish.

Elephone P9000 6

Elephone P9000 comes with a 4000 mAh battery which lasts two whole days without even enabling the battery saver feature. It charges very quickly using the stock or a quick charge enable charging brick. The left side of the phone is a mute button which mutes the phone when holding it for one second. This button can also be mapped for launching any application with one click keeping the “Mute” feature intact.

Elephone P9000 5

Elephone came running Android 7.0 nougat out of the box with a stock Android interface and launcher. There is no bloatware installed on it, and Elephone is supporting the P9000 by releasing updates and making the smartphone even better. You can enable various off-screen shortcuts from the setting and can also enable on-screen navigation bar to make it simpler to navigate, but there is no way to disable that hardware button.

Camera

Elephone P9000 8

At first, the camera app disappointed me a lot; there is a stock Android camera which only captures pictures in three modes; normal, panorama and picture-in-picture. But soon that disappointment fades away, I downloaded a third party camera app, and then I start to take some pictures. The pictures are so good and detailed, and colors are also very sharp. The HDR mode is also there which enhances the pictures by cooling down the color temperatures and clears the details in the picture. Take a look at some of the pictures taken by the camera (the app used is the CameraMX app at Google Play Store).

Performance

Elephone P9000 9

The display of the smartphone is quite sharp, but the color contrast is not as I thought it would be because the pixel density is high as 401 PPI. The quality of the multimedia content is amazing on this display, and the Blacks really look black, this display is better than any other display on similar priced Chinese smartphone. But this display doesn’t do much in outdoor; you have to set the brightness to maximum to read the content in the sun.

The CPU performance is also impressive, and it can handle high-end games like Asphalt Extreme and Mortal Kombat X without any lag. The RAM also works perfectly and multitask various apps at the same time. Also, it comes preinstalled with Android 7.0 Nougat; you can also use two apps at the same time using the split view feature. The battery performance is also very good as I said earlier, it can go up to two whole days with optimum usage.

Pros

  • Brilliant design with slim bezels (82% screen to body ratio)
  • Good camera (quick focus)
  • Crisp display
  • USB Type-C

Cons

  • No Gorilla Glass protection
  • Outdated camera app

Elephone P9000 3

Verdict

Elephone P9000 is available for Rs. 11,900 on Amazon and comparing to other under Rs. 12,000 smartphones, it is the best smartphone with the best features and specs. No smartphone with this price range comes with USB Type C which is a “Feature of the Future.” Elephone is making futuristic smartphones and if you are going to spend Rs. 12,000 on a smartphone then Elephone P9000 is the best option to out there.
