AMD Strix Halo: Is This the End of Dedicated Laptop GPUs?

AMD Strix Halo
AMD's Strix Halo APU boasts integrated graphics performance that rivals Nvidia's RTX 4070. Can this new APU kill dedicated laptop GPUs? Learn more in our in-depth analysis.

At CES 2024, AMD dropped a bombshell. Their new Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU, codenamed “Strix Halo,” boasts integrated graphics performance that supposedly surpasses even Nvidia’s RTX 4070 laptop GPU. In a series of internal benchmarks, AMD claims their flagship APU delivers up to a 68% performance uplift in modern games compared to an RTX 4070-equipped laptop. This bold claim has sent ripples through the tech world, with many questioning if this marks the beginning of the end for dedicated graphics cards in laptops.

What is AMD Strix Halo?

Strix Halo represents a new breed of APUs (Accelerated Processing Units) from AMD. It combines the power of their latest Zen 5 CPU architecture with a highly-capable RDNA 3.5 integrated GPU known as the Radeon 8060S. This particular model, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, packs 16 Zen 5 cores, 40 RDNA 3.5 Compute Units, and a staggering 128GB of unified memory. This unified memory architecture allows for dynamic allocation, with up to 96GB dedicated to the integrated GPU.

The Performance Claims

AMD’s own benchmarks paint a rosy picture for Strix Halo. In a suite of 17 games tested at 1080p resolution with high settings, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 consistently outperformed an Asus ROG Flow Z13 equipped with an Intel Core i9-13900H and an Nvidia RTX 4070 laptop GPU (65W TGP). The performance uplift varied across titles, with the most significant gain, a whopping 68%, observed in Borderlands 3. Other titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Hitman 3 also showed impressive gains.

However, it’s crucial to remember that these are first-party benchmarks, and independent testing is needed to validate these claims fully.

My Thoughts and Experiences

Having closely followed the evolution of integrated graphics, I’m cautiously optimistic about Strix Halo. While AMD’s claims are impressive, it’s essential to consider a few factors.

Firstly, the RTX 4070 in the comparison system has a 65W TGP, which is on the lower end for this GPU. A higher TGP would undoubtedly yield better performance. Secondly, while the average performance uplift across the 17 games is significant, the 68% figure seems like an outlier. Most games showed gains in the 20-30% range, which is still impressive but less groundbreaking.

From my experience with previous APUs, integrated graphics have come a long way, but they still struggle to match dedicated GPUs in demanding AAA titles. Strix Halo seems to be pushing the boundaries, but whether it can truly replace a mid-range dedicated GPU remains to be seen.

A Deeper Dive into the Numbers

To understand the performance claims better, let’s analyze some of the individual game results:

  • Borderlands 3: Strix Halo showed a 68% performance increase, the highest among all tested games. This result is particularly intriguing as Borderlands 3 is not known to be heavily optimized for AMD hardware.
  • Cyberpunk 2077: A 27% performance uplift was observed in this demanding title, showcasing Strix Halo’s ability to handle graphically intensive games.
  • Hitman 3: Another demanding title where Strix Halo delivered a 33% performance increase.

These results indicate that Strix Halo can hold its own against a dedicated GPU in several modern games. However, it’s important to remember that performance can vary greatly depending on the specific game and its optimization.

Beyond Gaming: Productivity and AI

Strix Halo is not just about gaming. AMD also highlighted its prowess in productivity tasks and AI workloads. In Blender, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 outperformed Intel’s Core Ultra 9 288V (Lunar Lake) by a staggering 302%. While not a direct comparison due to the difference in TDP, it showcases the raw processing power of Strix Halo.

Furthermore, AMD claims Strix Halo can deliver 2.2x more tokens per second than an RTX 4090 when running the Llama 70B Large Language Model, all while consuming 1/6th the power. This highlights the APU’s efficiency and its potential for AI-related tasks.

The Future of Laptop GPUs

Strix Halo’s potential to disrupt the laptop market is undeniable. If it can truly deliver on its performance claims, it could lead to a shift towards more integrated graphics solutions in laptops. This could result in thinner, lighter, and more power-efficient gaming laptops.

However, it’s crucial to remember that dedicated GPUs still have a significant advantage in raw performance, especially at higher resolutions and with ray tracing enabled. Strix Halo might not be the death knell for dedicated GPUs just yet, but it certainly puts them on notice.

AMD Strix Halo is a fascinating development in the world of laptop computing. Its impressive performance claims, combined with its AI capabilities and power efficiency, make it a compelling alternative to traditional laptops with dedicated GPUs.

While independent testing is needed to confirm AMD’s claims, Strix Halo has the potential to redefine what we expect from integrated graphics. It will be interesting to see how this technology evolves and how it impacts the future of laptop gaming.
