Android Nougat will soon have the capability to capture partial screenshots. However, the feature is currently hidden and not available to general public. According to reports, the code found in the Android Nougat 7.1 Android Open Source Project (AOSP) reveals the integration of a partial screenshot feature that could soon enter your smartphones.
Meanwhile, Reddit user with the handle @MrWasdennnoch has already started to dig deep into the AOSP source code. The Reddit user managed to locate the commit that includes the new partial screenshot feature in the master branch. The feature enables you to select the size and position for capturing a screenshot in the next version of Android.
According to @MrWasdennnoch, by modifying the code in line 53 of TakeScreenshotService to takeScreenshotPartial(), you can activate the feature on the Nexus 4.
In the video, Maxr1998 is running the NitrogenOS ROM. In the meantime, another Reddit user was able to activate the feature with the help of a physical keyboard and an OTG dongle.
To capture a screenshot, you just need to drag a specific area anywhere on the display. The screenshot will be automatically captured. You can view the captured screenshot by dragging the notification panel from the top.
Even though the partial screenshots feature is not available to general public, it is evident that Google has been testing it and will be released within the next few months along with Android 7.1 Nougat.
