WhatsApp has integrated video calling feature on Android and iOS platforms. According to a statement issued by the company, an official update in now available on Google Play Store, which brings video calling to the app. However, you will be able to access the update only if you are currently using the beta version of WhatsApp.
Upon testing, we are able to find that the app has introduced two new options such as Voice call and Video call. These options will be visible when you hit the call button. Even though we faced few issues when we connected using 4G, the video quality was somewhat decent.
According to sources, the Facebook-owned company is currently testing the feature and will be gradually migrated to the stable version. This is because the company needs to check the improvements in the calls before final migration.
WhatsApp video calling UI
You will find it easy to use the video calling UI. Basically, there are three options on the bottom. You can switch the camera, send a text message and mute the call using the provided options.
You will also view options to cancel the call, call again or record a voice message if your voice call is unanswered. To work with the Whatsapp video calling feature, both users should be making use of the latest beta release of the app. If you are using the stable version, the new functionality will not work.
There are reports that the company is working to release a new version, which will enable you to send full resolution images. Moreover, two-factor authentication will be implemented to WhatsApp to enhance the security.
The company is also gearing up to refresh the home dashboard in such a way that it imitates the Snapchat interface. If implemented, you can slide to the right to locate the camera symbol to share images and videos with your contacts.
How to enable WhasApp video calling
To enable the video calling feature, you need to navigate to Google Play Store and enroll into WhatsApp beta program. You will find the ‘join-in option’ at the bottom of the WhatsApp Play store listing page. Normally, it will take 5 to 10 minutes for your request to be processed.
As soon as your request is accepted, navigate to WhatsApp and backup your chat history in the “Chat backup” section inside the “Chats” option. After that, you need to uninstall WhatsApp and reinstall the beta version from the Google Play Store.
You should perform the above steps only if you are familiar with technical aspects. Otherwise, you can wait till WhatsApp plugins the feature with the stable version. Recently, WhatsApp has been updated with GIF support.
