Google says goodbye to Chromebook Pixel 2

Google has decided to discontinue its Chromebook Pixel 2. The device started showing as out of stock and upon being contacted for an update, Google said, “We’re committed to the Pixel program, but we don’t have plans to restock the Pixel 2.” Chromebook Pixel 2 was released in February of last year, so the discontinued product is 18 months old. A cheaper version was discontinued a few months ago in April 2016. There may be a number of different factors for the discontinuation:

  • Data suggesting that it was overpriced
  • Unavailability of components
  • A new model may be on the cards

It could be any of these reasons, a combination of these. Regardless, the decision does make sense, because the HP Chromebook models are far cheaper. The elimination of a few high-end ones makes some room for mid-budget Chromebooks. However, it is a good thing that Pixel C is still in the market.

To recap, the Chromebook Pixel C packs an impressive spec sheet for a Chromebook; it has the fifth-generation Intel Core i7 processor, that clocks at up to 2.7 GHz and includes an integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500. This flagship comes with a 16GB of RAM, plus 64GB of internal storage. The lower-priced model used to come with an Intel Core i5 processor along with 8GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage.

Both the models have a 12.85-inch, 4:3 AR, high-resolution 2,560×1,700 pixel touchscreen display, and 237 PPI. The Pixel C has been given two USB Type-C ports to recharge the device and thanks to the USB fast charging technologies, can give two hours of use from fifteen minutes of charging. Overall it can give the device twelve hours. Google’s aim with Pixel Chromebook is to “inspire the next gen of Chromebooks.” However, we haven’t seen a lot of high-powered, 16GB Chromebook models!

As far as the upcoming Chromebook is concerned, there have been no comments. But, the search giants have left some crumbs around, and it looks like it is headed for another one soon.
