As the Xbox 360 digital storefront approaches its scheduled closure on July 29, 2024, Microsoft is introducing a nostalgic twist for its fans. The company has resurrected the iconic ‘Blades’ interface as a dynamic background option for Xbox Series X and Series S users, a move that’s stirring both nostalgia and discussions among the gaming community.
The Iconic Blades Dashboard
Originally introduced with the Xbox 360 console in 2005, the Blades interface was beloved for its sleek metallic menu transitions that mimicked the shape of the console. This interface remained until 2008 before being replaced by the New Xbox Experience dashboard. The return of this classic design is available exclusively on the Xbox website, where it temporarily replaces the modern user interface to showcase games like ‘Far Cry 6’ and ‘Back 4 Blood’ within the nostalgic theme.
The Digital Store Closure
This revival comes at a poignant time as the Xbox 360 digital store prepares to shutter, marking the end of an era for the console that ceased production in 2016. From the closure date onwards, gamers will no longer be able to purchase new games, DLC, or other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Marketplace. However, any previously purchased content will remain accessible, and the closure will not affect the ability to play existing games or downloadable content.
Community Reactions
The reintroduction of the Blades background has been met with mixed reactions. While some appreciate the nostalgic nod, others find it less functional compared to newer designs due to its original structure, which was less accommodating of modern content-heavy interfaces. This return is part of a broader initiative by Microsoft to commemorate the legacy of Xbox 360 as part of its 20th-anniversary celebrations, which also include limited edition merchandise like a themed Xbox Series X controller and a collaboration with Adidas for special edition shoes
The closure of the Xbox 360 store underscores a shift towards a more unified and modern gaming experience across the Xbox ecosystem.
