Xiaomi India sells 1 million phones in 18 days, confirms CEO Lei Jun

Xiaomi Mi 5s

According to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, Mi India has sold nearly one million handsets within 18 days from October 1. In an open letter to Mi Fans, Jun said that it is an important milestone for the company after it established operations in India.

In his letter, Jun specifically thanked Manu and Hugo for their outstanding leadership. He also thanked the relevant product team members of Mi India for their hard work and dedication including teams based in China.

Mi India could never achieve this milestone without help from its partners. Jun thanked all distributors and online partners such as Flipkart, Amazon, and Snapdeal for extending their support. He also expressed thanks to all Mi Fans based in India, who are the main driving force behind the success of the company.

In August 2015, Mi India became the first smartphone brand to participate in Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Make in India‘ initiative. According to IDC, Mi India became the number one online smartphone brand in the country from July to August 2016.

Moreover, Mi India became the third-largest smartphone vendor within India’s top 30 cities with 8.4% market share. In September 2016, Redmi Note 3 became the best-selling handset in the online market with over 2.3 million devices sold in 6 months.

Towards the end of the open letter, Jun disclosed that the company faced acute competition from the market when they landed in India. However, with innovative high-quality products at attractive prices, the company was able to gain attention among customers.

Going forward, the company is gearing up to launch more premium products with improved after-sales service. He expressed confidence that Mi India will be able to capture the largest market share in India within few years.
