TRAI seeks clarification on Jio Happy New Year offer after complaints from Airtel and more

The nodal telecom regulatory authority of the nation, TRAI has sought an explanation from Reliance Jio, how its latest Happy New Year offer does not violate the norms of the government. Airtel and other service providers have contended that the latest offer by Jio violates the norms set by the Telecom regulatory body.

2017 is going to be an action-packed year for the Telecom industry and the ensuing melee is being looked with glee by the consumers who happen to be the biggest gainers. Different telecom service providers have pumped in nearly Rs. 9,27,000 to develop infrastructure and have resorted to every trick to up the ante and come on top of the competition.

Service providers are slashing data tariffs, giving sops like free voice calls and the groundbreaking entry of Reliance Jio has led to a free for all. Earlier Reliance Jio offered free unlimited 4G data till December. However, it has now extended the offer till March 2017. This has other service providers scurrying for cover. Having tried unsuccessfully to rub shoulders with Jio, it is now crying foul and appealing the TRAI to intervene in the matter.

The entry of Jio has given the Indian subscribers the benefit of rock bottom data fees and 4G speeds never seen earlier. Earlier Airtel ruled the roost with its 3G services. However, Jio has overturned the tables and is today more subscribers in its kitty than what the others have been able to achieve in more than a decade.

The TRAI has also flexed its muscle more than one time on the question of net neutrality. It poured cold water on the Free Basic offer by Facebook. It has again recommended allowing third party platforms to provide free data to a particular telecom service provider and this has once again ignited the net neutrality debate.
