Reliance Jio is the latest entrant in the telecom industry in India, and it has already started rolling out its fiber to home services starting from Chennai. Earlier this month, Mukesh Ambani had announced that the company would be rolling out its fiber services shortly.
A verified user from Chennai shared an invitation letter from Jio to start their services in their housing society. Mr. Ambani also promised that the company would “progressively roll out” the services in the top one hundred cities of the country.
In the letter, the given address of JioFiber is 2nd Floor, Prestige Palladium Bayan, Greems Road, Chennai 2. The letter states that the internet speed will be 100 Mbps and that an HD movie of 5GB can easily be downloaded in between five to seven minutes. The add-on of customized 4G services will also be one of the perks. The letter also says that the connection will make its way through the existing mediums such as ducts, shafts, and cable trays.

As far as the tariffs are concerned, nothing has been officially said, but taking a lead from the 4G services; it is expected that they are going to be ‘dirt cheap.’ A report by Rtn.Asia suggests that the plan will be such that 5GB of data will be provided at 100Mbps per day, beyond which the internet will be substantially slow. This is the cheapest plan at Rs. 1,000. The second and the third cheapest plans would be Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 2,000 respectively.
In the fiber optics field, from the data gathered from Gujarat and Mumbai, these rates are cheaper than that of competitors Hathway and You Broadband. These tariff wars erupting way before the Reliance launch is not something the Indian market is not familiar with. Immensely deep pockets have allowed the Ambani company dominate several markets within India, with low prices, and this seems to be the case here.
Jio cut down the 4G data rates by 80 percent, and now it is planning to do the same for fiber optics. However since establishing cables are involved here, changes may not occur overnight, this time around. The anticipation has already prompted some other companies to cut down their charges.
