Children in India are indifferent to government warning restricting use of popular social networking site – Facebook to a particular age group.

Reports from ASSOCHAM survey reveals, 73 percent of children in the age group of 8 to 13 years are using social networking sites like Facebook despite prohibition.

The survey was conducted in tier-I and tier-II cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmadabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Dehradun, etc.

Assocham or the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India is one of the apex trade associations of India. The organisation represents the interests of trade and commerce in India, and acts as an interface between industry and government.

The report highlights that most Indian minors have access to social media sites, and nearly 73 percent of them between 8 to 13 years old.

Surprisingly, these minors get access to Facebook with their parent’s assistance who readily extend their cooperation in creating their profiles or accounts.

“The percentage of children in the age bracket of eight and nine years using Facebook was relatively small — somewhere between five and 10,” ASSOCHAM secretary general D. S. Rawat said in the statement.

Parents of children in the age group of 8-13 years know that their child is a member of Facebook. It were working parents whose children were found to be more addictive to technology owing to the absence of much-needed parental supervision.

Approximately, 25 percent of 13-year old kids, 22 percent of 11-year old kids, and 15 percent of 10-year-olds have their account on Facebook, whereas 5-10 percent of 8 to 9-year olds also access the sites.

Other sites like Google Plus, Pinterest, and flick.com are being utilized by 85 percent of kids between the age group of 10-16 years, highlighted the report.
