Participating for the first time at the Google Annual Developer’s Conference in New Delhi on Wednesday, Xiaomi announced the release of their new Mi Box.
It is a 4K UHD set-top box that is powered by TV 6.0. The sleek device comes loaded with movies, shows, games from Google Play and YouTube.
The video Playback is said to support 60 frames a second.
The Mi Box is also equipped with a Quad-Core ARM Cortex-A53 processor, a 2GB DDR3 RAM and 8GB eMMC flash.
The expandable storage is unlimited. The device also has Dolby Digital Plus and DTS surround sound.
The Built-in Google Cast technology allows users to watch TV shows, movies, listen to music, and play games on a big screen.
It comes with a Bluetooth remote control that supports voice control and a game controller that is supported by any Android device.
Hugo Barra the Vice President of Xiaomi Global said that this is a huge milestone for the company and working closely with google has helped them optimise the device for the US and Indian markets, as they take the Android experience to another level.
Google VP Clay Bavor also announced that the Chinese company will be one of their first Android partners that support the Daydream VR Platform. He also believes that this is a major step closer to bringing VR and Android closer.
The number of companies offering set-top box services are innumerable, but that service domain is a completely different field. Android venturing into this domain sure is a harbinger of good things to come. However, this change has the potential to completely redefine the android user interface and Google Play.
