Watch Zuckerberg chat with Astronauts in Space via Facebook Live!

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has taken the site’s latest feature live chat to another level by doing a live chat with NASA astronauts Tim Kopra and Jeff Williams and ESA’s Tim Peake, who are aboard the International Space Station on June 1. The broadcast was live on Facebook.

Zuckerberg said, “When you’re building products to try to connect everyone in the world, connecting folks who are out in space is about as extreme and cool as it gets.”

This is the first time that NASA astronauts have done a live streaming on Facebook. In the past, they have used platforms like Google+ Hangouts and Skype. All these events use the same video streams from space, which are plugged into sources like Facebook and hangouts.

You can watch today’s event live here.

Before the event, Zuckerberg had invited people on the site to post their questions, and he would ask some of those questions to the astronauts. During the 20 minute chat the astronauts talked about things like their mission and how they have fun on the mission.

The astronauts said that the preparations for their mission involved studying and getting used to the impacts of zero gravity on the body.

As far as having fun is concerned, they play with weightlessness and observe the Earth from outer space. They also said that the lack of gravity brings them back to their childhood as they play with anything and everything, and they even did a somersault to prove that.

At the end of the chat upon being asked about their favorite bit of technology that they like to use in space, the astronauts revealed that they like Virtual Reality. Understandable considering that they have to live away from Earth for such extended periods of time.

The streaming had over 130,000 viewers from all over the world.
