The Indian Government’s decision to approve the Paris Climate Change agreement aimed to contain global warming has been hailed by the big nations of the world. India has decided to ratify the agreement on October 2 which incidentally is also the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who himself advocated an eco-friendly way of life.
French Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Segolene Royal has congratulated India for being one of the earliest nations to ratify the climate agreement. The French ambassador has also praised the Indian Prime Minister for his astute vision to approve the accord.
The Paris agreement which was signed in December will have to be ratified by at least 55 nations who produce 55% of the greenhouse gasses in the world. India’s decision has also been welcomed by the US. The Indian Prime Minister announced that the nation would ratify the agreement on Gandhi Jayanti i.e. 2 October 2016.
More than 190 nations had reached a consensus and set up ambitious goals for halting Global Warming and funneling trillions of Dollars to poorer countries to make the switch over from fossil fuel to ecologically sustainable power sources. The nations agreed to limit the increase in global temperatures to 2 degree Celsius.
The West and the US have been asking for an early ratification of the treaty, but India said it wants to make it sure it completes its process of discussions to ensure that its developmental projects are not affected because of any rash and hasty decision. The issue of ratification of the treaty also came up in the discussions between Prime Minister Modi and US President Barack Obama the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Vientiane, Laos earlier this month.
The outgoing US President has been very vocal about climate change and would like to go down in history as one who was able to coax the world to ratify the treaty which seeks to limit global warming by 2-degree centigrade.
