Access Water expedition on Ganges

With an aim to initiate a debate among the youngster on the global water crisis, a women team composed of celebrated explorers from the seven continents will start 2,400 kilometers long journey along the Ganges river. The team will include Krushna Patil, the youngest Indian Woman to climb the Mount Everest in 2009.

The 55 days Ganga Expedition has been titled ‘Access Water’ and is the first in a series of seven-continent expeditions, which is to end with a journey to Antarctica.

Krushna Patil, who had conquered Mount Everest to become the youngest Indian Woman in 2009, said that Ganga is a very powerful starting point and is intimately linked to the subcontinent’s culture.

Other members include the first woman to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole, Norwegian Liv Arnesen, Kim Smith of South Africa, Krushnaa Patil of India, Marcia Gutierrez of Chile, Cindy Jiaojiao Hu of China, Olfat Haider from Israel and Lisa te Heuheu of New Zealand.

Krushna further added that the focus will be on the Woman folk since they run the household and changing the way a woman thinks about the river will surely have a positive impact.

The expedition will start from October 20-21 from the source of the Ganges at Gomukh, Gangotri high in the Himalayas. The team will follow the course of the river and will pass through the cities of Kanpur, Varanasi, Allahabad, Patna and will end near Kolkatta in December.

The expedition is organized by Bancroft-Arnesen Explore (BAE) foundation and is partnered in this endeavour by some organizations like UNESCO, Google, WAGGGS, Young Pioneers of China, Norwegian embassy, Tunheim and Percept Profile.

The expedition seeks to unite the youth to ensure future leaders of the world to demand a safe and abundant world that begins with access to clean water.

It is an eight-member team and is lead by Ann Bancroft, who is an honorary member of the National Women’s Hall of Fame of the United States.
