Tata Sky and Videocon D2H, leading Direct-to-home (DTH) players in India have got into collaboration to launch new gen-next HD smart set-top boxes with Internet browsing capability before the end of Q1 2016.

Set to change the way in which we navigate the Internet via Televisions in future, the new set-top boxes enable eligible subscribers to browse and interact on certain apps including access to social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. It remains to be seen whether the DTH providers provide app through their app store.

Commenting on the launch of new set-top boxes, Saurabh Dhoot, Executive Chairman, Videocon d2h revealed that the launch of gen-next HD smart set-top box demonstrates their unrivalled expertise and innovation in creation, delivery and execution of technologically advanced products.

By converting your existing TV into a smart TV, you will be able to establish connectivity with not only the world but also standard TV and DTH programs. For instance, you will be able to read newspapers on your big screen without any separate USB streaming sticks.

Available to customers without any additional cost, Harit Nagpal, Chief Executive Officer, Tata Sky revealed that the service will be available before the end of Q1 2016.

Nagpal also disclosed that as a premium content distribution platform, the company would like to provide complete freedom to consumers when it comes to the selection of content and medium. He also stated that they have defined the level of convergence which the consumer would like to have.

If rumors are to be believed, the new HD smart set-top boxes will have the capability to access social media platforms. However, we still don’t have any information as to how users post updates via TV. Most probably, the new set-top boxes will have Bluetooth functionality and hence you will be able to use an external keyboard for data input.
