Tata Communications building world’s biggest and India’s first Internet of Things (IoT) network

Tata Communications

Tata Communications is building country’s first Internet of Things (IoT) Network. This network is supposed to connect millions of devices that work on IoT networks like smart meters, smart traffic lights, etc. through it, no matter how far they are from each other. This network will connect even devices that are located underground or in 50 metres deep water.

IoT (Internet of Things) is a technology that has got a lot of potentials and expanding and is being widely accepted, mostly by enterprises and government sectors who provide services and goods like electricity meters, industrial machinery, electrical grids, etc.

LoRa is the name of the technology that is being used by the company for deploying a low powered wide area network that will be used in this communication system. As of now, Tata Communications intends to connect Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru.

“This will be world’s largest IoT network. We see a massive need for a new smart network to enable intelligent solutions for a variety of M2M applications to facilitate a simpler and smarter way of life and at a lower cost of ownership. These trials are just the beginning; we intend to deploy this network across India and invite customers with IoT projects to work with us to test it, end-to-end,” said Tri Pham, Cheif Strategy Officer at Tata Communications.

LoRa is basically, a communication technology that is dedicated to the IoT/Machine to machine communication. The network is super secure, low powered and bidirectional. The first phase of this operation aims at equipping Tier 1,2,3 and 4 cities.

Unlike GSM and Wi-Fi technology, this technology has lesser limitations, as it can work underground and deeper waters as deep as 50m. This signal also has a 15 Km range.

Gartner has forecasted that by 2020 the number of connected devices will reach 25 billion that is around three times the number of people who live on Earth at the moment.
