Samsung Galaxy S9 to Come with 512GB Internal Storage

Galaxy S9

With Android phones, you need not worry about storage issues as they come in with an expandable storage option, unlike iPhone or iPads which lack the same. However, Samsung is all set to revolutionize its upcoming flagship with the latest Galaxy S9 that comes with a whopping 512GB built-in storage option. On Tuesday, Samsung announced the beginning of mass production of smartphone industry’s first ever 512GB internal storage solution which is just in time close to the new Galaxy S9 launch.

The iPhone and iPads come with large built-in storage solution, but Samsung lacked the same on its phones and tablets. The new entry-level flagship phones by Samsung like Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 houses 64GB internal memory which is huge but still not enough for many users. The basic advantage that built-in memory holds over expandable memory is that they are faster. The faster the flash memory, the smoother the operations over the phone would feel.

Samsung announced that its latest 512 eUFS chip should provide an unparalleled storage capacity as well as outstanding performance for all the future flagship smartphones or tablets.

The press release, however, doesn’t contain any mention of the Galaxy S9 or Note 9 but most likely these flagships are the candidates for the humongous upgrade. These phones are expected to be launched next year. The Galaxy Note 8 model has a 256GB internal storage, but it’s hard to find and expensive as well. Similarly, if the speculations are accurate and the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 get a revamped inbuilt memory, the users can expect a high price range for the same.

The newly introduced 512GB memory chip is constructed with 64-layer 512Gb V-NAND chips that join together with the help of a controller chip. This is double the density of the 48-layer V-NAND 256GB eUFS memory. This suggests that the new memory chip doesn’t require extra physical space inside the smartphone.

The performance of sequential read and write speeds range from 860MB/s to 255MB/s. You need just 6 seconds to transfer any HD video clip to an SSD.

The last paragraph of the announcement by Samsung was rather interesting which goes something like this:

On a related note, Samsung intends to steadily increase an aggressive production volume for its 64-layer 512Gb V-NAND chips, in addition to expanding its 256Gb V-NAND production. This should meet the increase in demand for advanced embedded mobile storage, as well as for premium SSDs and removable memory cards with high density and performance.

This statement by Samsung suggests that the company is ready to introduce its products with higher storage solutions with high chances of Galaxy S9 and Note 9 is the first from that list.
