How to Reset Forgotten Password on Windows 10, 8, 7

Lost the admin password to your Windows installation? How can I get back into my laptop or tablet PC after forgetting the password? In this situation, most users would do a factory reset and reinstall all software from scratch. However, before taking such a drastic step, it is well worth trying the following methods to reset your forgotten Windows 10 / 8 / 7 password.

Reset Forgotten Password from Login Screen

After a failed password attempt, the login screen will display a password reset option under the password field. If you previously set up a hint for your Windows user, then that hint will also be displayed, which may help you remember the password.

If the password hint doesn’t help, you can reset the password from Windows login screen. The recovery procedure varies depending on your account type:

1. Local Account:

Click the “Reset password” option under the password field. When the password reset wizard opens, insert the password reset disc you created previously. Select the drive where your reset disk can be found and click Next. Enter a new password twice and provide a hint if desired, and then click Next to complete the recovery procedure.

Since Windows 10 April 2018 Update, you can add security questions & answers to a local account while you remember your password. In case you forgot the password, you can click the “Reset password” option from the login screen and reset the lost password by entering the answers you remember.

2. Microsoft Account:

Click the “I forgot my password” option instead. You’ll need to first identify the relevant Microsoft account, and then use the recovery email account or phone to verify your account with the security code. After that, you’re able to reset your forgotten Microsoft account password.

Reset Forgotten Password with Bootable USB

if you can’t use any of the methods above, then your best method is to try the third-party software –  PCUnlocker. This utility has been around for a while and it has a good reputation. Let’s walk through the steps you need to do for resetting a forgotten Windows password:

  1. Use your friend’s computer to download PCUnlocker ISO image. After you’ve downloaded it, you need to write that ISO file to a USB drive and make your USB bootable. This can be done using the free open-source utility Rufus
  2. Once the bootable USB drive was made, insert it into your computer. When starting the machine, quickly press a BIOS key (F2, F12, DEL, ESC, etc.) to access the one-time boot menu. Choose the USB drive from the bootable devices and let your PC to boot into it.
  3. After the loading of Windows PE environment is complete, the PCUnlocker utility will display. Under the User Name heading, locate the user for which you want to reset the password and select it. Click on Reset Password button. 
  4. The password for the user account you chose in the last step was removed instantly and now you can click the Restart button to log in to Windows without password!
