Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Jio, the telecom arm of the Reliance Industries (RIL) is set to offer broadband internet services across 900 India cities and towns using optical fiber (FTTx). The subsidiary branch although does not reveal the timeframe for the pan-India roll out, spells some developments like the company entering into content tie-ups with some bigwigs – Walt Disney, Extramarks Education, and Network18 for the digital channels it plans to offer.

Reliance Jio is planning to launch free broadband internet service across 900 Indian cities.

Its project to get fiber based broadband will enable the firm to ensure seamless Internet experience to Indian mobile users and simultaneously reduce dependence on 4G spectrum.

The company in a report said that it has already completed a detailed planning for pan-India implementation of the infrastructure needed for the project and finalized its agreements with several key companies required for the roll-out. These companies range from renown technology companies, infrastructure providers to popular and branded device manufacturers and application developers. It has already launched free Wi-Fi spots in 8 locations at Ahmedabad and 9 locations at Baroda and Surat.

“In addition to 4G wireless services, RJIL (Reliance Jio Infocomm) is rolling out high speed internet services via FTTx in over 900 cities/towns. The high-speed fiber connectivity will enable RJIL to provide a wide gamut of digital services across various sectors,” the company said.

“The company aims to create a digital ecosystem which can be used to benefit the industry, the government and retail users. The key leadership talent required for the setting up of the business are in place and are currently leading the implementation phase,” Reliance Industries said in the company’s 2013-2014 annual report.

Apart from the broadband internet services, Jio intends to offer voice calling service using voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology on its 4G network. Reliance Jio marked entry into the telecom market following its bagging of BWA license in 2010.
