Redmi K20, Redmi K20 Pro launched: True flagship killers?

After months of speculations and leaks, Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi has finally unveiled the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro smartphones at an event held in Beijing, China.

The Redmi K20 is an upper mid-range smartphone with Snapdragon 730 SoC. The K20 Pro, on the other hand, comes with flagship grade specs and is priced very aggressively. That said, Xiaomi is expected to introduce the former as “Mi A3” and the latter as “Poco F2” in India.

Redmi K20 Pro Specs, Features

The Redmi K20 Pro bears a 3D four-curved large arc body which looks quite premium in red and blue colours. As for the specs, the phone features a 6.39-inch AMOLED full-HD+ (1080×2340 pixels) screen with 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and 91.9 per cent screen to body ratio. The panel also bears hardware DC dimming support (reduces flickering at low brightness levels), accompanied by an in-display fingerprint sensor. The brightness maxes out at 600 nits.

Under the hood, the handset gets powered by octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC with one core clocked at 2.85GHz, three cores at 2.42GHz, and four at 1.8GHz, paired with Adreno 640 GPU. It comes four configurations including 6/64GB, 6/128GB, 8/128GB and 8/256GB RAM and storage options. One can expand the storage further up to 512GB with the given microSD card slot.

For photography, the Redmi K20 Pro gets an AI-powered triple rear camera setup at the rear. The module comprises of a 48-megapixel   Sony IMX586 primary shooter with f/1.75 aperture, a 13-megapixel wide-angle shooter, and a third 8-megapixel unit with an f/2.4 lens. For selfies, the phone gets a 20-megapixel front camera, housed in the pop-up module which Xiaomi says comes up in 0.8 seconds. It also has a sapphire lens coating making it wear and tear resistant.

On the software front, the handset runs MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie. Other features include an eight-layer liquid cooling technology and Game Turbo 2.0 feature that optimises the phone for better audio and network connection while gaming. A 4,000mAh battery with backs all of this. The 27W fast charging support is claimed to juice up the phone within 80 minutes.

Furthermore, the phone gets a USB Type-C port, and 3.5mm audio jack. In terms of the connectivity options, you will get Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, and NFC onboard.

Redmi K20 Specs, Features

The Redmi K20, on the other hand, gets powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 SoC, coupled with 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage.

Just like the Pro model, this one too sports a 48MP camera at the rear but bears Sony IMX582 sensor instead. Moreover, it offers the same 20-megapixel pop-up selfie camera and 4,000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging, compared to the 27W on the former.

Redmi K20, K20 Pro Price and Availability

Notably, the Redmi K20 Pro has been priced at CNY 2,499 (about Rs. 25,200) in China for the 6/64GB variant. Whereas, the 6/128GB, 8/128GB and 8/256GB variants will cost CNY 2,599 (about Rs. 26,200), CNY 2,799 (about Rs. 28,200), and CNY 2,999 (about Rs. 30,200) respectively. It’ll be offered in three colour options- Glacier Blue, Flame Red, and Carbon Fiber Black.

The Redmi K20, on the other hand, starts at CNY 1,999 (roughly Rs. 20,200) for the 6/64GB model. Whereas, the 6/128GB variant is pitted at CNY 2,099 (roughly Rs. 21,200). Compared to the Pro model, this one will be sold only in two colour options- Glacier Blue and Flame Red.
