The modding community has descended upon the newly released PC port of Red Dead Redemption, and things have gotten gloriously weird. Just weeks after launch, players are already slinging code alongside six-shooters, creating a wild west playground of the bizarre. From the unsettling sight of a beardless John Marston to the impossible return of Arthur Morgan, and even giant robots battling it out in the grainy black and white of an old-timey cinema, no corner of Rockstar’s classic has been left untouched.
Why this sudden explosion of creativity?
Well, it seems the long wait for a PC version has built up a reservoir of pent-up modding energy. Red Dead Redemption originally launched way back in 2010 for consoles, leaving PC gamers yearning for a chance to experience its dusty trails and epic gunfights. Now that it’s finally here (and thankfully, a decent port at that), modders are seizing the opportunity to reshape the game in their own image.
A Fistful of Mods
- The Curse of the Clean-Shaven: Perhaps the most unsettling mod making the rounds is the one that removes John Marston’s iconic beard. It’s amazing how such a small change can make such a big difference. Suddenly, the grizzled outlaw looks like he should be selling newspapers instead of robbing trains. I tried it out myself, and I have to say, it’s strangely disturbing. It’s like seeing your favorite uncle without his mustache.
- Arthur’s Back in the Saddle: One of the most popular mods allows players to experience the game as Arthur Morgan, the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2. Given the tragic fate that befalls Arthur in the prequel, this mod offers a chance for a “what if?” scenario, allowing players to imagine a world where he survived. I haven’t had a chance to dive into this one yet, but I’m eager to see how it impacts the story and gameplay.
- Angels in Armadillos: Taking the absurdity to a whole new level, another mod introduces elements from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion into the game. Imagine strolling into the local saloon and instead of a piano player, you see a giant robot battling angels on the flickering screen! It’s a completely bonkers concept, and a testament to the creativity of the modding community.
More Than Just a Pretty Face
These mods are more than just cosmetic changes. Many offer gameplay enhancements, bug fixes, and even new missions and storylines. Some modders are focused on improving the game’s visuals, bringing it closer to the graphical fidelity of Red Dead Redemption 2. Others are adding new weapons, outfits, and even playable characters.
The modding scene is still in its early stages, but it’s already clear that Red Dead Redemption on PC has a bright future ahead of it. With a passionate community of modders constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, we can expect to see even more wild and wonderful creations in the months and years to come.
