Monday was the day of the week when 3 major telecom operators in India entered into an agreement pledging to provide 3G roaming services to each other’s customers using their network across country.
Yes, Reliance, Aircel and Tata Teleservices have signed a tripartite agreement whereby each company would oversee the work of interlinking roaming partnerships to their GSM customers.

With this partnership, the telecom majors believe opening up of a significant market opportunity for themselves, as all of their 3G customers will now be able to access pan-India 3G services while roaming outside the company’s own 3G circles.
Moreover, the alliance will provide frequent domestic travelers with seamless 3G data connectivity across the country. The act makes me wonder, what took so long for these companies to seal the deal.
“We are delighted to be the first operator to offer 3G national roaming to our customers in partnership with other telecom firms having state-of-the-art 3G networks. These alliances will further consolidate RCom’s position as the leading data operator in the country and will help the Company improve its post-paid and Corporate customer market share,” RCom’s Chief Executive Officer for Consumer Business, Gurdeep Singh, said in a statement.
RCom circles comprise Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Assam, North East, Jammu & Kashmir.
Following the signing of the agreement, RCom would get access to 5 uncommon service areas – Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and UP East where Aircel has presence. Its agreement with TTSL gives it access to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana and UP west.
In return, Aircel and Tata Teleservices would readily gain access to most expensive service areas of Delhi and Mumbai where RCom has permits.
