Nokia working on its own AI assistant Viki to take on Cortana and Siri

Nokia Viki

If rumors are to be believed, Nokia is gearing up to launch its AI assistant called Viki. The rumor gained strength with the revelation of the information on a trademark application. According to Dutch blog GSMinfo, Nokia has filed a trademark petition, which confirms that the company has reserved the name, Viki.

If Viki comes to reality, it will join ranks with Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana and Alexa including the upcoming Samsung Bixby. Recently, we reported that Samsung Galaxy S8 would be integrated with its own AI assistant named Bixby.

Based on the information gathered from the filing, the trademark is aimed for the creation of software including monitoring mobile and web based digital assistants. Moreover, the new product will work with knowledge and combine all data sources into a single chat service and voice based user interface.

Rewinding back, Nokia was very popular from 2002 to 2009. After the evolution of Android platform, Nokia lost the plot and the market share considerably declined. In 2013, Nokia was acquired by Microsoft and launched series of Windows Phones under Lumia brand. However, the smartphones never attracted customers except for Windows enthusiasts.

If you look at the market share of Lumia phones, it never crossed more than 10 percent. Incidentally, Nokia stopped the production of Lumia handsets. Meanwhile, HMD Global has entered into a strategic partnership with Nokia to manufacture and sell new smartphones for the next 10 years.

The recently launched Nokia 6 features a 5.5-inch 2.5D Gorilla Glass display, Snapdragon 430 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage loaded with Android Nougat. Powered by a 3000mAh battery, the Nokia 6 offers 16MP rear camera sensor coupled with an 8MP front-facing snapper.

As of this writing, we don’t have any credible information about whether the new virtual assistant named Viki will be made available to Nokia 6. However, we expect an update OTA sometime within the next three months.

As mentioned above, we already have several virtual assistants at our disposal. It remains to be seen as to how the upcoming Viki assistant will break the barriers in a continent where there is a broad range of virtual assistants already available.
