Ghaziabad – NASA Space Settlement Design Competition is one of the most prestigious competitions in the world. Thanks to the improved infrastructure and enhanced level of knowledge that India has managed to win it this year.

NASA received over 994 entries from 3,007 students belonging to over 21 different countries for this competition; however, the winner is a team of students from Amity International School located in Ghaziabad, India.

NASA has been organizing this competition for the last twenty-two years, but this is the first time when an Indian team has won it.

Challenge To Win This Competition

NASA threw a challenge to all the participants in which they had to design a colony on Mars that could house 10,000 people without any hassle. The finale of the competition was held at the Kennedy Space Centre, where different teams presented their projects.

The Indian team came up with a design plan that could house 24,000 people at Mars easily. While preparing the final report, Indian students took into account the quality of soil to withstand dust storms. Their model would cost around $1.2 trillion and was modeled to complete in about 12-13 years.

These young students were given 41 hours to prepare the final report, which had to be 40 page long. To make sure that they met the deadline, Indian students divided the entire project among them equally and grabbed information from different sources ranging from research papers to offline data.

The Stepping Stone

There were many teams from some of the most reputed schools in the world; however, the one thing that favored Indian students was their attention to details. They considered factors like water recycling, waste recycling, security system, power generation, communication system, etc. They even included emergency situations like computer malfunction, fire, design of space suits, apartments, air quality, temperature regulation and space for leisure activities.

It will prove to be a great motivation for other schools aiming for such competition in the future.
