India launches climate action website ahead of Global Climate Change Summit in Paris

Global Climate Change Summit

In October, India had put forth to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change a document underlining its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) to reduce carbon emissions and at the same time continuing in the path of fast developments and overcoming the challenges of the coming times.

India today launched a website that comprehensively outlines its plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a very transparent manner as a precursor to the Global Climate Change Summit scheduled to begin in Paris on November 30.

Prakash Javadekar, Minister, associated with the Forest and Climate change ministry stated that the website (www.justclimateaction.org) gives a bird’s eye view of the action plan set into motion by the nation to reduce carbon emissions by 35% by 2030.

Javdekar added that it is the first time a developing country has put into place a mechanism to realize the dream of reducing carbon emissions by 30% by 2030. A platform has been created to bring all associated agencies to come together and showcase their work.

The website contains numerous videos which has been shared with the social media and includes over 40 clippings of PM Narendra Modi’s speeches outlining different measures were taken to tackle climate change and its associated pitfalls.

The website boasts 300 GB of data in the form of films, reports, and a rich content that will both educate and retain the interest of the audience.

The action plan for achieving a reduction of carbon emissions by 33-35% by 2030 from 2005 has many skeptics who describe the target as lofty and difficult to achieve. The plan also the creation of an additional carbon sink of 2.5-3 billion tons of CO2 equivalent by reforestation and increasing tree cover by 2030.

However, Javedekar was quick to point that it was an “achievable” goal with a properly laid-out plan. Javdekar will be accompanying the Prime Minister for the Paris Conference.
