India is seeing rapid growth in mobile internet users. Thanks to the increasing number of smartphones available at a low price and affordable internet data plans offered by telecom operators, more and more people in India are jumping into the smart life of being an internet user.

A report published by Internet & Mobile Association of India and IMRB International suggests that the number of mobile internet users in India is expected to reach 213 million by June this year.

The report, titled “Mobile Internet in India 2014”, stated that the number of mobile internet users in the country stood at 173 million by the end of 2014. The study predicts that mobile internet users in rural areas may increase up to 49 million by March 2015 and 53 million by June 2015. That shows a steady growth of 33% from October last year.

But the larger percentage of mobile internet users are based in urban areas of India. The report expects that the number of mobile internet users in urban areas would rise to 143 million by March and 160 million by June.

If the report’s projection turns out to be accurate, then the number of mobile internet users in urban and rural areas combined may reach a staggering 213 million by June of this year.

Despite the growing number of mobile internet users, monthly bills for mobile services has seen a 13 percent increase. Around 45% of that bill was used for internet services last year which now has grown to 54%. Users on average spend Rs. 235 a month for mobile internet services. But nearly 30% users spend more than Rs. 500 per month for mobile internet services, the report stated.
