Hyundai India just launched its sixth generation Elantra sedan in the country. We do a quick comparison between the new 2016 Hyundai Elantra and the Skoda Octavia, which also falls in the same category of sedans. To begin with, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra gets several cosmetic upgrades along with new features, which has always been the case with Hyundai. The Korean giant has always set the bar high when it comes to features and upgrades. The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is available in both petrol and diesel options across five variants which include S, SX, SX AT, SX(O), SX(O) AT.  

Let’s see how the 2016 Elantra stacks up against the Skoda Octavia:

Diesel

 

The diesel variant of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra is powered by a 1.6-litre CRDi engine which churns out 128PS of power and 265Nm of torque. While the Skoda Octavia features a larger 2.0-litre TDI four cylinder engine that produces 143PS of power and 320Nm of torque.

 

Both sedans are equipped with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox. The  Hyundai Elantra comes with a 6-speed torque converter, while the Skoda Octavia comes with a 6-speed DSG option.

Petrol

The petrol variant of the new Hyundai Elantra 2016 is powered by a 2.0-litre MPI four cylinder engine that generates 152PS of power and 191 Nm of torque.

While the petrol version of the Skoda Octavia comes in 1.4TSI and 1.8TSI turbocharging units, the 1.4 TSI engine unit of the Octavia delivers 140PS and 250Nm of torque. The Octavia 1.8TSI is most powerful petrol sedan in the price range producing 180PS of power and 250Nm of torque.

The petrol version of the new Hyundai Elantra is available with a 6-speed manual or automatic. On the other hand, the Skoda Octavia petrol comes with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG transmission.

The manual variant of the Hyundai Elantra diesel gives a mileage of 22.54 kmpl, making it the most fuel-efficient sedan in the segment. While its automatic variant delivers a mileage of 18.23 kmpl. The Octavia’s diesel manual variant gives a fuel efficiency of 20.6 kmpl, while its diesel automatic variant gives a mileage of 19.3 kmpl.

Coming on to the fuel efficiency of their petrol variants, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra offers a mileage of 14.59 kmpl, while it automatic variant has a fuel efficiency of 14.62 kmpl. The Skoda Octavia petrol variant gives a mileage of 16.8 kmpl and 14.7 kmpl for manual and automatic transmissions respectively.

With a bigger engine, the petrol variant of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra is not as fuel efficient as the Octavia, which packs a smaller engine eventually offering better mileage. That said, Hyundai Elantra falls short of the Octavia by only a small margin when it comes to fuel efficiency.

The new 2016 Hyundai Elantra measures 4570mm x 1800mm x 1465mm with a wheelbase of 2700mm. The Skoda Octavia on the other hand measures 4659mm x 1814mm x 1476 mm with a wheel base of 2688mm.

Despite the shorter length, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra has larger wheelbase compared to the Skoda Octavia, thereby giving the Elantra much better interior space. That said, the Skoda Octavia is the biggest car in the segment with respect to its exterior dimensions.

The diesel variant of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra ranges between Rs. 14.79 lakh to Rs 19.19 lakh, while its petrol variant ranges between 12.99 lakh to Rs 17.99 lakh.

On the other hand, the Skoda Octavia diesel variant ranges between Rs. 18.46 lakh to Rs. 22.41 lakh, while the prices of its petrol variant ranges between Rs 16.58 lakhs to Rs 20.83 lakhs.
