A report on The Information claims that Huawei is planning to scrap Android OS from its phones and has entrusted a former Apple designer to come up with its own OS named Kirin. However, the company still has every intention with Android OS for the foreseeable future.
Last year, the company was accused of ripping off Apple’s design. Ms. Brody (former Apple designer who is now with Huawei) is expected to introduce new features that look like those found on most Android phones, but with Huawei’s flair. The company is also secretly developing an alternative mobile operating system to hedge its bet against Google’s control of Android, according to three people who briefed about the project.
According to the report, the team developing the OS is based somewhere in Scandinavia and also includes ex-employees from Nokia, besides the aforementioned ex-Apple mobile UI design leader Abigail Brody, who didn’t comment on the project in an interview with The Information. Although she did acknowledge its existence saying that she plans to meet with the team in August, this year.
The report also details the changes that Brody is planning to bring Huawei’s mobile OS based on Android to future versions. The report says that Brody will address cosmetic issues and “pain points” with the next major version of EMUI set to be released this fall. This includes a visual revamp of its software that looks less like the iOS with fresh and vibrant colors and a new app drawer.
The company is actively trying to resolve the biggest problems regarding appearances, but betting on its own OS seems to be a major risk. If the company is prepared to take, it might just be worth it.
