Facebook Messenger hits milestone, records 1 billion monthly active users

Facebook has officially announced that its standalone Messenger app has reached a whopping 1 billion monthly active users. As a part of celebrations, Facebook Messenger now has a floating balloon gift.

All you need to do is send a balloon emoji to any of your friends to see new animations in the conversation. The company says that Messenger touches so many lives worldwide and has also created a short video clip to commemorate the occasion.

“As part of this journey to one billion, we focused on creating the best possible experiences in modern day communications. We remain focused on helping connect people to the people and businesses who matter most. Thank you to everyone who uses Messenger around the world, and we’re looking forward to connecting the next billion,” said David Marcus, vice president at Messenger.

It’s been two years since Facebook split the Messenger app from the main app for mobile users. Hence, this large user base can be mainly attributed to the company’s decision to make Messenger a standalone app. Put simply, they created a separate platform whereby users were forced to download the app.

Facebook has added a plethora of modern mobile sharing features to its Messenger app since then which include, VoIP, video calling, stickers, voice clips, peer-to-peer payments, location along with a platform for third-party developers.
