New digital antennas to boost data speed upto 1000 times on smartphones

The researchers at Aalto University in Finland have developed new digital antennas, which will most likely power next generation smartphones. The research report was published in the journal IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters. Touted to be more energy efficient, the digital antennas are up to 100 to 1000 times faster than the antennas included with currently available smartphones.

At present, antennas in smartphones are placed at the top and bottom of the display. This means the touch screen display does not cover the entire handset. With the help of the new method, antennas require less space and the display of the phone can be made larger. Moreover, the design of the phone can be free.

According to sources, the newly developed antenna system has an ability to carve the data transfer speed in such a way that it sets new benchmarks in the Industry. Furthermore, battery life will be improved to a great extent due to increased efficiency of the new method.

Commenting on the discovery, Jari-Matti Hannula, a doctoral candidate at Aalto University disclosed that once the new digital antennas have been implemented, smartphone apps such as GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi no longer require their own dedicated antennas.

Hannul said that the data transfer will take place through one digitally controlled antenna. This system will not only simplify phone design but also enable a larger display size as the antenna does not require increased space.

Digital antennas combine small elements

By making use of the new digital antennas, several small antenna elements can be easily combined. This will enable them to work on the same page as one antenna that can be made to operate digitally with any frequency.

The newly developed antennas will also eliminate the need to infuse analog components to tune into the desired frequency. If you look at the current trend, analog parts are used to develop antennas.

Digital antennas provide enhanced radiation efficiency

The main advantage of the new digital antennas is that it helps in the creation of compact antennas with better radiation efficiency. Nowadays, the radiation frequency has been decreasing because the frequency range used by smartphones has been continuously increasing.

If the radiation efficiency is poor, then it will lead to a short transmission range. Hence, mobile service providers are forced to compensate with a denser network of base stations. This will lead to energy loss in both the phone and the base station. Moreover, it is not feasible to increase the network density since they are expensive.

According to telecom analysts, the new method will change the way we communicate with the upcoming generation of smartphones. This is because the antennas currently in use are based on technology developed half a century ago.
